How To Develop a Staffing Strategy for Your Business

It involves recruiting talented candidates, retaining competent hires and fitting them in the right roles within your business. Here are six steps for locating and keeping quality employees for your company. 

1. Clarify Your Goals

Before you determine the right people for your business, you first must determine exactly what you want your company to become. List both long- and short-term goals for the organization. You can then figure out what types of employees will help you achieve these goals.     

2. Study the Current Landscape

Next, figure out the current state of your workforce. Create one system that consolidates the data you have gathered on each employee. Use this information to determine any skills gaps among the staff, or to identify workers who are on track for future leadership roles.

You also need to prepare for any permanent or long-term staff exits. You should thus have a modern human resources system that keeps track of any upcoming leaves or retirements. It should additionally note upcoming promotions that will leave a specific job vacant. This should help you identify and recruit for job openings well in advance.  

3. Determine Your Needs

Use the information you have gathered to determine your staffing needs. Decide what roles you have to fill, and what skills your business requires. Be sure to also consider how long it will take to fill each role. After all, it will take time to recruit and train the right employees.

4. Make a Projection

Work with your owners or executive leadership team to create a long-term plan for the workforce. Do not forget to factor in any potential mergers or restructures. Your plan should also consider which departments will be the most vital as your business grows. Make sure that you have a sufficient recruitment team and budget to achieve your goals.

5. Develop a Strong Culture

Recruiting employees is only part of the battle. To keep your staff happy and working hard, you need a positive culture within the office. You can attend workshops or ask other industry peers for advice in this regard.

6. Review the Plan

Your company can change rapidly. Review your plan regularly to make sure it can adapt to any new conditions.
